In all honestly, the only reason I have a tumblr. account is because I happened upon tumblr. many moons ago when I was going through a big “I need to own my name EVERYWHERE ON THE INTERNET” phase.
And the reason I was going through this phase because I was unable to obtain the domain kaylewis.com
Now… there is absolutely no need for me to own “kaylewis.com.” I have nothing to put on kaylewis.com. I don’t own a business. I have nothing to sell. I’m not a photographer. I’m not a blogger. I’m not a parent with a growing need to post every. waking. minute. of my kids’ lives. I’m not even a writer!
But social media has taught the world that “Everybody is a brand. And you must own your brand EVERYWHERE!!!” and thus I took it as a huge personal early adopter failure that I did not own the most basic of branding tools ever: the domain of my own name.
Thus every time a new social tool comes out that looks like it will be promising and/or around for awhile I must go sign up, early, to get my name.
Even if I sign up and don’t use it for forever.
Even if I sign up and use it twice and then don’t use it again for forever.
Even if I sign up after a major tech company has purchased it and will (likely, inevitably) kill it once they get complete control.
So that’s how I ended up with a tumblr account many moons ago. And tonight I’m actually posting on it for the first time. Go me!
Me… ya know. Kay Lewis.
